What are the SOOs and how do you recommend studying for the SOO?

The simulated office orals (SOOs) are CCFPs way of examining how you perform in a clinical setting. The oral examination includes five SOOs which are each 15 minutes in length. At 12 minutes, you will be informed that you have 3 minutes remaining and at this time, you should start concluding the encounter.

1. Know what the CCFP is looking for

Review the marking scheme. CCFP is looking for SPECIFIC points- know what these are inside and out. The CCFP provides some example scenario marking schemes.

2. Practice, Practice, Practice.

Have a study buddy. From the residents we polled, they told us working with a fellow resident and practicing SOO scenarios helped them prepare best for the exam. Timing is critical and when you are practicing make sure you are addressing the key objectives.

The CCFP website provides example scenarios– here they are:

3. How to come out as the SUPERIOR CERTIFCIANT

You want to aim for the best! You haven’t gotten this far in your training by being average.

The certificant will gather the illness experience to understand the presenting problem. But, you want to go BEYOND that. You need to go IN-DEPTH using targeted questions and powerful communication skills to take it one step further. When you practice, highlight the points you missed. Read this so you know how to take it that ONE-STEP FURTHER:
